The inner Master, the spiritual “I”, is omniscient, sees into the future, and has admirable powers, whose limits we cannot set.

By Roberto Assagioli (date unknown), Lesson VI, from the Assagioli Archive in Florence, derived from Psicoenergetica.it. Translated from Italian by Gordon Symons, original title: Il Rapporto Con L’anima
There are cosmic influences, as already discussed in the first lecture and subsequent conversation held by Prof. Piccardi, and there are many other data in the Eastern teachings and also in the Western tradition. Now I will say something about this vast, interesting field of things that can directly relate to the development and use of parapsychological faculties. There are two periods in which the parapsychological faculties operate more easily, I do not say better, but more intensely, and above all periods, on the days around the full moon. In general, from two days before to two days after the day of the full moon, and above all, on the day and also in the hour of the full moon.
It is a fact already noted and also popularly known: I refer to the influence of the moon in general on the nervous and psychic state. When we talk about lunatics and lunatics, this word derives precisely from the observation that lunar influences can accentuate certain nervous and psychic manifestations: even dogs that bark at the full moon, and so on. There is a psychiatric clinic in which they have established precisely that epileptic episodes are more frequent around the full moon, so they regularly increase surveillance, the number of nurses increases in those days. So here we are in the presence of a precise observation.
In short, there is an intensification of psychic sensitivity. This fact presents the aforementioned negative aspects, but it can also have positive aspects that we can use, that is to say that in those periods it is easier to use the parapsychological faculties and above all to receive psychic and spiritual influences. So in those times, and we are there right now, because the full moon will occur in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, at about 2 am here in Florence.
In these periods what is necessary, on the one hand, is greater vigilance of one’s own psychism, on one’s neuropsychic sensitivity. On the other hand, you can use them to do special psychospiritual exercises to intensify our parapsychological activities. Above all, that of elevation and reception of the spiritual influx, of the spiritual tide that descends to the Earth on a monthly basis and descends on us. So, to receive, to recognize, and then – very important – to express, to use them. Because many neuropsychic disorders are due to the exuberance of unused energies, energies of all kinds; the lower ones of which have become so accentuated in psychoanalysis, but not less so in the higher ones, which flow especially periodically during the full moon periods.
The energies must be used, kept in circulation and expressed, otherwise there is congestion. There are psychic congestions and spiritual congestions, no less than blood congestions. And just as blood congestions give physical disorders, even serious ones, so these too are still not recognized, but real psychic, emotional, mental and parapsychological congestions can cause problems; and the cure consists in using them, putting them out, expressing them, in the etymological sense of the word. Then these forces, instead of disturbing, prove to be useful, or may prove to be so, and valuable, if used in a constructive manner, in an appropriate manner.
Therefore it is wrong to put the emphasis, as is generally done, on attracting forces in order to receive; this is fine, but then there are two equally important phases: that of recognizing and distinguishing the forces, energies and messages that descend from above, and then to express and use these energies. But we will have occasion to talk about all this in our meetings. In the coming days, and with each full moon, the watchword is: vigilance, that is, using the cycle, the occasion, and then giving expression to the energies that flow.
And now let’s take up the topic of vertical telepathy started last week. I wish to begin by calling attention to its great importance, which is not in the least recognized, otherwise we would be living in a very different way. An analogy may help to realize this: if it were known that there was a great sage and spiritual instructor endowed with the highest parapsychological faculties, such as clairvoyance, premonition, the power of healing, a loving and disinterested sage, we would certainly want to talk to him, to ask him for advice and help; would we not be ready to submit ourselves to that discipline in order to obtain his teaching and advice, his precious guidance, so as to be restored by the energies of spiritual love radiating from him? We would be well aware that such help could prevent us from so many mistakes, sufferings, travails, and could really transform our lives.
Well, such a wise man, such a master does exist, is close by, indeed, is present in each of us. It is the higher Self, the spiritual Self, the Soul, the solar angel. To reach him you need to make a journey, but a journey into our internal worlds. To reach him, an ascent is needed, the ascent towards the heights of the superconscious; and an adequate psychospiritual preparation will be necessary to become capable of sustaining the powerful inflow, to grasp its subtle messages, distinguishing them from all the other internal voices, to understand them well and interpret their symbolism. Finally, we must be willing to implement what he has indicated to us with firm and constant will.
This preparation is certainly not easy. The soul considers things, events, beings, in a very different way from the way in which the personal “I” does. His sense of values, of proportions is very different from that of ordinary consciousness, with its short-sighted and narrow vision, as Dante says. What the spiritual self indicates to us is our true good, but it may be contrary to our desires, our personal preferences.
The soul does not require sacrifices in the common and wrong sense of forced and hard renunciations, but asks for them in the sense of a consecration, which implies the gradual elimination of many things, habits, which are harmful and useless, or less important, and to give time to what is most and only true. Moreover, the higher self, in its wisdom and in its understanding love, does not ask us to do this in a perfect way. He is patient, he can wait, knowing well that surely, however more or less slowly, we will reach the high goal that is destined for us and that he holds very present from the beginning of our evolutionary pilgrimage.
In other words, the soul has the sense of the eternal, or better: it lives in the eternal, in the eternal “now”, not in an eternal split from the evolutionary, purely transcendent becoming. The eternal “now”, a paradoxical expression that must be intuited, but that gives the key to a fundamental truth, that is, of the relations existing between the transcendent and the immanent, between being and becoming. It is the full life and is precisely the synthesis of being and becoming. In you they are both, or they should both be present, conscious and working. We should live attentive, aware of the moment, but with the background of the eternal.
Well then, this brings us back to the starting point: the synthesis of the moment and the eternal is the cycle. Life takes place in cycles, in cycles within cycles, from the smallest to the most grandiose, cycles that are a set of organically connected moments, but precisely connected by something that transcends them: the eternal. A synthetic expression of this is the phrase “the glorious eternal now”. But to put ourselves in this harmony with the soul, and it is, I repeat, all a matter of harmony, as with the radio – I have said other times that from the beginning we tried to make radios as powerful as possible, the valves multiplied, but soon we realized that power was often at the expense of selectivity, of the purity of sound reception. And so instead, the maximum importance was given to the selectivity, to the purity of the reception, with only as much power as necessary to capture the transmitter.
So it is with you. The problem is not so much to receive, in a certain sense one receives too much, and from all sides, it is rather a question of an increasingly refined and subtle selectivity, and of a purity of reception. To do this preparation, it is necessary to overcome the resistance, the rebellions of our egoism, of our moral laziness, and we all have plenty of that, which even if now is masked by external activity, which is often an evasion, it is a passivity disguised as activity. But we will succeed if we are well aware of it, and if we constantly remember that it is worth it.
The inner Master, the spiritual “I”, is omniscient, sees into the future, has admirable powers, whose limits we cannot set. His guidance, his inspiration, his marvellous help gives us light, peace and security, and arouses in us joy and love, making us effective instruments for the good of others.
I spoke of the symbols of the spiritual self, of the Soul; they are various and each one indicates, suggests an aspect. Among the more general ones there are: a star, a sphere of radiant fire, a variegated lotus with 9 petals (this is an oriental symbol that I will be able to illustrate another time), an angelic figure, what the Orientals call “the solar angel”. Other more defined symbols are: the inner master, the old sage, the hero, the inner warrior. This last symbol is used in a beautiful passage of that precious little book of spiritual teachings, The Light on the Path. In one passage we are invited to address the Soul with the following words: “Stand aside in the coming battle, and though you fight, do not be the warrior …”.
See here how the need for invocation is made clear. It is we who must take the first step, open the door, create the channel, only in this way does he intervene, because he does not oblige us, does not force us. He has given us the gift of initiative, of free will, of which we often make such bad use, but it is the most precious gift, because it leads us to experience, to errors, to suffering, to awakening. So, he does not force us to anything. If we appeal to him, he responds promptly. I repeat: “If your cry reaches his intent ear… know your friends from your enemies”. It is the clear allusion to the confusion between the voices that come from above and below and from the sides and from all sides.
“He is yourself, though you are finite and subject to err … he is eternal and sure … and on the day of the great peace, he will become one with you.” This was received by Mabel Collins from an instructor. Moreover, the origin does not matter, it is the substance that matters. Yes, it was received telepathically. Indeed, see, it is an example of vertical telepathy of the highest type. It was received in part clairvoyantly: the receiver saw the sentences one after the other and wrote them down.
As you can see, the paradox of duality and unity is constantly re-proposed. From the “I”, and from its source. The personal “I”, the reflection, descends from the spiritual self. One of the meanings of the parable of the Prodigal Son could be applied to this. The personal “I” is the prodigal son who descended into the world of matter and forgets his origin, the paternal home, until, after having freely done all the nonsense of which he was capable, all the errors, in the double sense of making mistakes and to going astray, to return, to recover the nostalgia for the paternal home, the search, and finally to find it again.
But this paradox, this duality of a unity, must be lived inwardly, it is not enough to accept it and recognize it intellectually, I would say scientifically, (that must be done, and it is the first step). Now it is a question of realizing it, of living it. And, as I said, before coming to reunification there is the whole period, I would say, of the dramatic conversation, of the invocation and evocation, of the question and the answer, of the internal conversation, and gradually of the approach, of the more and more frequent and more vivid sparks between the two poles that are approaching, approaching, which in a few moments touch each other, then again separate until the moment of the great peace, when the two become one.
