This synthesis definition rests on a distinction between simple aggregation and the dynamic coordination of multiplicity around a higher unifying principle \u2014 a process observable throughout nature, from the atom to the organism, and fundamental to the integration of the human personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-working-synthesis-definition\">A Working Synthesis Definition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an archival note dated 20 September 1937, Assagioli offered one of his most precise formulations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Synthesis is regulation \u2014 control \u2014 direction \u2014 ordered expression and co-operative utilisation of energies of units of different orders.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five terms organise the definition: regulation, control, direction, ordered expression, and co-operative utilisation. What distinguishes synthesis from simple mixture is this element of ordered regulation. Things in a heap are not synthesised.
