Abstract<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In this lecture, Roberto Assagioli outlines key spiritual aspects of psychosynthesis, beginning with the need for a psychology adequate to modern spiritual crises. He introduces the midway point as an intermediate state between ordinary personal consciousness and true soul consciousness, describing it as a position of calm detachment from which one can observe the personality impartially while maintaining orientation towards the soul. Assagioli emphasises that this midway point is not static but requires daily reconquest against forces that pull awareness downward. He presents it as a necessary condition for genuine psychosynthesis, the integrative work of building a coherent personality under the guidance of the Self. The lecture concludes by extending synthesis beyond the individual to encompass interpersonal, group and cosmic dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From several quarters we hear of a crisis of psychology. There is a growing realization that the existing academic and scientific psychologies are not adequate to minister to the needs and to solve the problems of a growing number of men and women.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason is that these needs are specifically spiritual and can be met satisfactorily only on a spiritual ground. In a recent book: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Some aspect of psychology<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> by Beatrice Rosling the situation is thus clearly described: p. 218-219.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jung in his recent book which has the significant title <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Modern man in search of a soul<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> , confirms that spiritual dissatisfaction is the cause of many nervous and psychic troubles and he has written to a fellow-worker:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real ground of the neurosis is, in many cases, the inability to recognize the work that is waiting for them of helping to build up a new civilization. (Rosling, p. 220)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed the dramatic persecution of the unwilling personality by the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Hound of Heaven<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> , which the great and unfortunate Francis Thompson has so forcibly described in his famous poem, is no mere poetic fiction, but an instance of what actually happens in many modern men and women.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In such cases the current methods of psychoanalysis and suggestion cannot avail, and the cure is found only through a complete reconstruction of the personality around a new and higher center of consciousness, which includes the newly awakened spiritual energies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is therefore an urgent need for a new spiritual psychology offering to modern man both an adequate conception of himself as a psychospiritual being, and an efficient technique for his inner readjustment and development.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psychosynthesis<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> is an attempt in this direction. Its aim is to contribute to the creation of a spiritual psychology and of a psycho-spiritual technique of self-realization, of psychotherapy, and of education.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tonight I will endeavor \u2013 within the limits of the time at my disposal \u2013 to point out some of the aspects of psychosynthesis, and then to answer any questions which may be asked on this subject.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inclusive conception of the “inner man”, offered by psychosynthesis may be made clear through the aid of a diagram.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
