A complete personal psychosynthesis must include the body. How? <\/span><\/span>
Having a correct attitude towards the body means giving it its rightful place in the awareness we have of ourselves. Therefore:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Appreciation<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Care<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Development<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

but also:<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Subordination<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Utilization<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Transmutation<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Almost everyone feels at one with his body, and appropriates its conditions and sensations, saying “I am hungry, I am thirsty, I am tired”. And they struggle or even fail to conceive of their own existence separate and independent from their body. This is a <\/span><\/span>lived<\/span><\/span><\/em> materialism. It is necessary to get rid of it. It is the first door to be broken through or opened to get out of prison. It is necessary to consciously realize independence from the body. It is not enough to know this theoretically \u2014 this is already a help, but the real spiritual development begins when one feels independent from the body.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Warning: to disidentify from the body does not mean to despise it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The body is our precious instrument, the necessary means for experience here.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We must respect it, and admire its complex and skillful apparatus. But we must also become the masters of the body, and not be its slaves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Medieval asceticism was excessive, violent, and too separative. Modern man oscillates between hedonism, violent demands, and artificial stimuli. Let’s take a typical modern man as an example: dominated as he is by ambition, he forces his body to do relentless work in unhealthy environments (perverted asceticism!), and then at night he compensates for it by giving vent to his instincts and satisfying his cravings: gluttony, sensuality…<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Modern healthy asceticism: control \u2014 vigilance \u2014 discipline \u2014 harmony with nature \u2014 purification.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Let’s realize that our physical body belongs to the animal kingdom! Related psychological and spiritual deductions …<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Let us consider the body as a living, intelligent reality, permeated with psychic activity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    \r\n
  1. Disidentification<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  2. Self-realization<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  3. Revitalization and renewal of the body<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Active training of the body must be done with an attitude of right balance. Do not give it too much importance. Train it with detachment, without identification, from above \u2014 considering and using it as an instrument of perception, experience and action.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    I. – Correct care of the body:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Heal it<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Recharge it<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Renew it<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Regenerate and transmute it (talk to it)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    II. – Discipline of the body:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Psychospiritual exercises (see <\/span><\/span>Panorama of Psychological Living<\/span><\/span><\/em> )<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    III. – Use, development, training, improvement: as a tool<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    IV. – Mastery:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    … \u201cPushing a button\u201d… (analogy to car)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    In summary, discipline and training includes two stages:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

      \r\n
    1. Conscious<\/span><\/span><\/em> “top-down” training.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
    2. “Unconscious” functioning \u2014 creations of habits, of “automatic” activities, thus freeing up attention for other higher tasks.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

      Other insights:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        \r\n
      • Be in a friendly relationship with your body. Reward it when it has earned it!<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
      • Discipline it firmly, but with good will and love \u2014 like a pet to be trained (\u201cBrother Ass\u201d).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
      • Appreciate it. Include it as part of the new organic unity, of our bio-psychosynthesis.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        The body is the temple of God. Consider the functions of a temple. Be on guard against over-valuing and focusing on the building \u2014 the church!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
