Synthesis

11/11/2018 af Kenneth Sørensen

Synthesis in Assagioli’s understanding

Synthesis is the central concept in Roberto Assagioli’s Psychosynthesis — the principle from which the discipline takes its name. This synthesis definition rests on a distinction between simple aggregation and the dynamic coordination of multiplicity around a higher unifying principle — a process observable throughout nature, from the atom to the organism, and fundamental to the integration of the human personality.

A Working Synthesis Definition

In an archival note dated 20 September 1937, Assagioli offered one of his most precise formulations:

Synthesis is regulation — control — direction — ordered expression and co-operative utilisation of energies of units of different orders.

Five terms organise the definition: regulation, control, direction, ordered expression, and co-operative utilisation. What distinguishes synthesis from simple mixture is this element of ordered regulation. Things in a heap are not synthesised. Things that have been coordinated according to a principle — bent to a common purpose, made to function together — are.

Synthesis Is Not

Several common misunderstandings are worth ruling out. Synthesis is not compromise between opposing tendencies, nor the cancellation of differences into a uniform grey, nor mere toleration of diversity. Assagioli insisted in his archival writings on this point: the synthesis of opposites does not erase the opposites but preserves them within a higher unity that both contains and transcends them. In a handwritten note he reached for the Buddhist image of the noble middle path — not a midpoint between extremes, which would be static, but a dynamic progress toward a goal in which the opposites are blended and raised.

The Four Levels of Synthesis in Psychosynthesis

Assagioli traced synthesis as a single principle operating at four distinguishable levels:

  • Natural synthesis — the coordination of elements in inorganic matter, biological life, and physical systems, from the atom as a dynamic equilibrium of forces to the organism as a regulated balance of antagonistic systems.
  • Psychic synthesis — the integration of the elements of the personality around a unifying centre, which may be a passion, a vocation, a social role, or ultimately the self as a point of pure self-awareness and will.
  • Therapeutic synthesis — the combination in clinical practice of existential depth work and active techniques, aimed at assessment, insight, catharsis, the regulation of drives, and the activation of latent higher potentialities.
  • Transpersonal synthesis — the fusion of the personal self with the Transpersonal Self or Soul, and ultimately the participation of the individual in the cosmic synthesis that draws the whole of manifestation toward its transcendent source.

These four levels are not separate phenomena. They are the same synthetic principle operating at different scales of reality, each preparing and making possible the next.

Why Synthesis Is the Central Concept

The will, Assagioli wrote, “is a synthetic power. It dominates multiplicity and wields it into unity.” The development of the will is therefore inseparable from the cultivation of synthesis, and synthesis is the outcome toward which every stage of Psychosynthesis practice is oriented. Understanding synthesis is understanding what Assagioli thought he was doing when he named his system — not simply proposing another school of psychology, but a therapy grounded in a metaphysics of participation in the synthetic structure of reality. For the comprehensive scholarly treatment of this concept across all domains of Assagioli’s teaching, see Synthesis in Psychosynthesis: Assagioli’s Unified Teaching.
