The Mandala of Energy Psychology: The Seven Energy Types and Essence Types

Preface to Energy Psychology

This book on energy psychology has been in the works since 2007, when my good friend and colleague Søren Hauge and I participated as lecturers at a conference in the USA on energy psychology. Here, on the plane home, we decided to make an effort to bring energy psychology to a wider public. Before that, we had both studied and taught the subject for many years, here known under the name ‘The Seven Rays’. However, we both felt that a new language and a simplified presentation of this knowledge should now be developed, and we have since worked together on this. This book is my personal take on this, and it is based, among other things, on the educational courses we have completed together in energy psychology.

In addition, the book is based on my experiences from my daily meditation practice since 1988, where I have sat and worked in and with the energies. There is no more direct access to understanding energy psychology than the meditative approach. In recent years, I have often sat for several hours a day and developed an understanding of energy and the ability to bring the diverse psychological qualities out into my personal radiance. You can literally change your personality from the inside out through this practice. I have described the method in detail in my book Integral Meditation .

I have also taken a Master’s degree in Psychosynthesis, which is a transpersonal psychology and one of the earliest exponents of energy psychology. In this connection, I have had several thousand client hours and developed courses and education within the same. The experiences from all these meetings with courageous and profound people who have managed to transform themselves have also contributed significantly to this book. I have shared these experiences in detail in my book The Soul of Psychosynthesis .

The latest development in energy psychology is the creation of JivaYou.com. JivaYou is an online identity profile based on energy psychology that Søren Hauge and I have jointly developed the psychology for. Jiva means unique identity in Sanskrit, one of the world’s oldest languages. JivaYou is about you, and that’s why we say JivaYou – your unique identity. JivaYou offers different types of personality profiles, coaching education, coaching courses, lectures and much more.

However, it is equally important to mention the pioneers who were the first to present energy psychology. I am thus greatly indebted to Alice Bailey, Roberto Assagioli, Sri Aurobindo, Ken Wilber and Michael Robbins, to name just a few of the most important exponents. In Chapter 1 I briefly review the history of psychology, and here these pioneers will be touched upon.

Everything is energy , and this is the basic starting point for energy psychology. Today, there are both quantum physical, psychological and spiritual perspectives on this statement. But if we start by simply looking at how we use spoken language, it is obvious that we all register energies and refer to them.

We talk about places having good or bad energy. What exactly we mean by this may be unclear, but most people are familiar with the experience of entering a room with bad energy. We also say that “there was a good atmosphere at that party”. But what is an atmosphere? In reality, an atmosphere is a psychological energy climate with certain psychological qualities such as joy, spontaneity, openness, etc. For example, we talk about a good or bad psychological work environment, which is a definition of the types of energies you want to promote or inhibit in the workplace.

We also talk about a person having a good aura, perhaps a charismatic aura or, at worst, a negative aura. What are we talking about and referring to here? These are of course the psychological energies that all people radiate. But not only that, we also attribute special qualities to the physical surroundings and products. A car can have graceful and elegant lines. A home can have a practical and functional atmosphere. It is energy that we are trying to describe here when we put words to the different qualities in the diverse physical forms of the external world. It is also energy that we are referring to when we refer to the psychological atmospheres in which we live.

In a sense, we are energy illiterate because we do not know the language of energy psychology. However, there is a key to the world of energies that gives us deep insight into the different types of energies that exist.

What makes energy psychology unique compared to many other psychologies is its presentation of the seven life energies or seven rays . These constitute the basic building blocks of the cosmos, of man and of nature. It is these energies that manifest themselves as the diverse psychological qualities that all people radiate. Knowledge of these is important as we can thereby develop them and promote their influence in ourselves and in the world.

There are also other reasons why they are important.

Insight into the types of energy gives you greater social understanding

Let’s focus on the social area. We know that it can be difficult to understand each other’s behavior. We tend to interpret other people’s aura and behavior based on our own natural and safe preferences. This means that there are certain types of psychological energies that we either like or dislike. We probably all know the type who is always the first to speak and easily comes to control the social space. The slightly more sensitive and touchy types will often experience this as dominant, harsh and domineering behavior. They simply interpret a dynamic aura and behavior negatively, perhaps because it arouses fear and discomfort in themselves.

Perhaps the type is dominant, but if you ask another person, the interpretation might be that the person is energetic and full of initiative. We always interpret each other’s appearance and behavior based on our own values, and therefore we often arrive at completely different interpretations of each other’s motives. This naturally creates scope for many social conflicts and cooperation problems. The less we understand, the more difficult other people can be experienced. We also become inclined to ‘judge’ other people on the wrong basis. The language of energy psychology gives us a completely unique insight into the different psychological energy types and their underlying motives. When we learn to read the psychological energies a person radiates based on the person’s own premises, we get a very special opportunity to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes. It is thus a very important tool when we want to make social relationships and interactions function optimally.

It is our experience that once we understand what energies are at work in a person, we also change our interpretation of that person’s behavior. There is a big difference between experiencing the discomfort of a person who talks a lot when you know that it is a natural need for this type, rather than when you do not have this knowledge. It simply becomes easier to be more neutral without taking it personally. From there, we can more easily set limits on the behavior if desired.

The energy types bring you home within yourself

Of course, we must first and foremost start from ourselves when we are to understand what energies are at play in the world. Energy psychology claims that there are some types of energies we feel more at home in than others. In other words, we have a kind of natural energy DNA.

Some people will thus always seek contexts where facts, reason and science are the way to understand the world. Others would rather immerse themselves in the psychological content of relationships, and for them togetherness, psychology and community are the key to a meaningful life. We can say that we are all predisposed to experience the world through certain types of intelligences and ways of seeing the world. When we find our own natural composition , then we have found the special qualities and abilities that make us unique. And once we have learned to observe and notice, then these qualities and inner psychological forces will be experienced as different types of energies.

This book is intended as a contribution to putting you on the trail of your natural energies – what we call energy types in this book . I hope that the book will create a knowledge base through which you can recognize your own unique energy DNA. Finding your energy types brings you home within yourself. It gives a deep sense of self-acceptance and an insight into the basic needs that make life exciting and meaningful to live.

In other words, energy psychology is the ability to read and understand our own and others’ energies on five different levels from a spectrum of seven different energies.

Energy psychology – content and structure

Energy Psychology: The 12 Chapters

I have chosen to build the book very logically and structured as it is mostly intended to be seen as a professional book on energy psychology. Therefore, in the first four chapters I review the most important elements and basic building blocks of energy psychology: the five levels, the seven life energies, the seven psychological functions and the seven energy types.

The next five chapters describe combinations and details that provide important nuances and points
for understanding. The last chapter is my personal story where I also describe my own type composition. There may be readers who would prefer to read this personal account before moving on to the academic basis. I will leave that up to the reader’s own judgment.

I have made a necessary delimitation in connection with this book because the material is so enormous, and therefore I primarily describe the personality model of energy psychology, i.e. the basic building blocks of psychology. I have thus omitted large parts of the developmental psychology of energy psychology, e.g. the doctrine of how energy types develop from immature to mature types. These important elements will be put in focus in my next book on energy psychology.

Finally, I would like to thank Søren Hauge for all the inspiring years we have taught together. He has also written chapter 6, while I have written the rest. I would also like to thank all the students and clients who have helped me define the new presentation over the years. A very special thank you to Jesper Bundgaard, my partner in the company JivaYou.com, and who has contributed to developing our common identity profile since 2012. I would also like to extend a warm thank you to Hanne Lund Birkholm who has provided feedback on the book and to Lis Andersen for a very thorough and fine proofreading.

I hope that with this foreword I have made you curious to know more about energy types, and I wish you an exciting and educational journey into the world of energies.

Chapter 1

A World of Energy
– The Five Levels

Everything is energy

Energy Psychology: The 12 Chapters

This statement is the philosophical foundation of this entire book. It is by no means a new statement, for Eastern philosophies have emphasized this claim for thousands of years. However, it is only with the advent of quantum physics in the 20th century that the philosophy has been scientifically proven. Einstein’s theory of relativity states that “mass and energy are both different manifestations of
the same thing.” This is certainly food for thought.

Nikola Tesla, 1856-1943
Nikola Tesla, 1856-1943

The Serbian-American physicist and inventor Nikola Tesla’s statement does the same: “If you want to understand the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”

Now this is not a scientific theory book, but rather a psychological work that aims to give you an introduction to energy psychology. Quantum physics only describes physical energies, while energy psychology opens up the entire spectrum. If everything is energy, what does that mean from a psychological perspective? What kind of energies are we talking about?

My focus in this book is to describe the seven human energy types and how they create psychological qualities at all levels of human existence. I acknowledge that energy psychology is still in its infancy. Therefore, this presentation is only a start and a contribution to an investigation that will lead into a future world of energy.

Energy psychology may be a somewhat vague and mysterious concept for some people, but I will try to make it more concrete with this book. The fact is that we experience and talk about energy all the time. We may use words other than energy, but the point is that our reactions to and assessments of each other are based on the impressions we get of each other’s behavior and appearance.

As mentioned in the preface, our personal aura equals energy, and the psychological qualities we experience in each other are also energy. When we say that a person is sweet, dynamic, fast, graceful or neat, we say so based on a reading of that person’s qualities and aura. We are reading energy!

Our understanding of each other is not based solely on our interpretation of each other’s physical behavior. If a person helps an elderly lady across the street with her shopping bags, you might think that person is being nice. But if you discover that her purse has been stolen on the same occasion, then the action is not nice. In other words, it is important that we can sense and read the motive behind people’s behavior.

When we try to ‘read’ another person’s motives, we are reading the psychological qualities that this person exudes. In other words, we are reading the person’s emotions, body language, and tone of voice.

Our ability to read each other’s energies depends on how nuanced our language is. How deep our experience and understanding of human nature is. A prerequisite for understanding our relationships must of course be based on an understanding of ourselves. Fortunately, we have within ourselves a natural access to experience all human states and energies. It is this world that energy psychology invites us into by giving us a map of the areas and energies we encounter there.

When we talk about energy, we are largely talking about the qualities that the energy radiates and that we read – consciously or unconsciously. Let’s explore these qualities.

The five psychological levels of energy psychology

Energy psychology identifies at least five levels in the human being where we can experience and read energy qualities: the body, the emotions, the thoughts, the personality and the essence. This is also a distinction that the Italian doctor and psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli makes in his book Typology of Psychosynthesis (more on Assagioli below). Figure 1 illustrates how the human being is a kind of psychological pyramid. The white light in the middle of the pyramid is the conscious I which seeks to unite the top and bottom with each other. Let us now take one level at a time.

Body radiance – our physical appearance

Desmond Tutu, 1831-
Desmond Tutu, 1831-

We experience the energies of the body through its shape, movement and posture. A body that has a hunched posture and moves slowly may be experienced as weak and low in energy. Conversely, a body that is straight, flexible and fast may be experienced as graceful and high in energy. In short, there are
different body types, each with their own unique qualities.

The body’s radiating qualities are probably most clearly recognized in the shape and expression of the face. The face is the mask or persona through which the inner psychological environment unfolds. In the two pictures on the right and left we have the South African Bishop Desmond Tutu and the Danish shipping company Mærsk McKinney-
Møller. What qualities do you read in their faces…?

Arnold Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, 1913-2012
Arnold Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, 1913-2012

It is clear that one face is open and receptive, while the other is more sharp and direct. These are two different types we are observing here. However, it is not only the human form that radiates energy qualities, all physical forms do, and we read them all the time. Cars, animals, houses, trees, flowers, telephones each have their own unique qualities. We can classify them into different types, and when we know these we gain a deeper knowledge of their properties.

There is a big difference between the experience of a biologist walking through a forest and that of people who walk more ignorantly. The biologist will see oak, ash and beech, while the ignorant will just see trees. Knowledge of the different types of energy enables us to appreciate their unique qualities and possibly benefit from their properties.

The radiance of emotional life – our temperament

The five psychological levels of man
Figure 1. The five psychological levels of the human being

There are of course also different emotional types, each with its own distinctive qualities. The different national characteristics are a good example of this. We know that there are differences in the temperament of Italians, Germans and Russians. We read the quality of a person’s emotional life through the different basic moods that a person radiates.

Some people are calm, receptive and empathetic, while others are more irritable, restless and dominant. We all have access to the entire group of basic emotions that different psychologists have suggested. But we do not all have them equally accessible to the same extent. When we can read and understand these emotional energies in ourselves and others, we gain greater and more nuanced emotional depth and understanding. We gain insight into the differences in types and thus also a much greater ability to create harmonious interaction with ourselves and others.

The radiance of thought life – our mentality

Our mental life also has its own unique character, because it is clear that our thought and communication patterns can be quite different. This can make it difficult to understand each other, because you experience that you are not really on the same wavelength. Some people think and speak very abstractly, and it is as if their curiosity to explore the world of theories and ideas is inexhaustible. Others are much more practical and concrete, and they often lose interest when they hear abstract theories. There is a third type that is much more associative, and who thinks and speaks in pictures and stories. Then there is the dynamic and very goal-oriented type that likes to make things clear. This last type prefers to speak when there is something important and purposeful to say. What we are reading here is a person’s mentality , which is the special type of quality of thinking. Once we understand the mentality and what motivates it, we naturally have a much greater ability to harmonize our communication.

The radiance of personality – our persona

The next levels may be a little more complex to understand, but if energy psychology were simple, it would also be superficial since humans are complex beings.

When we talk about the energies of personality, it is the overall and recognizable quality with which a person enters into character. Personality arises and is expressed when a person begins to gather his resources and set a course for his life. It is the individual person who makes his own choices and acts on them.

It is with the energy of will that we first and foremost assemble our personality. The will-to-be-ourselves. The energy of will is the underlying force with which we create a successful life that fulfills our social, financial and career needs.

When we feel the will to be ourselves , we assess what types of qualities we want to bring out in our personality. The choice will almost always be conditioned by the fact that we feel more at home in some qualities than others. It is not something we necessarily think about, because we just experience that we have some available resources that unfold naturally. Some people are distinctly dynamic, sensitive, intelligent, practical or creative in the way they unfold their personality. We recognize the types when we see them and can read their energy. It is also this level that most personality tests are aimed at.

One could say that personality is the dominant energy that colors a person’s outward behavior. But the mental, emotional, and physical energies add unique nuances and facets to the personality’s life.

The radiance of the essence – our humanity

We have now reached the most subtle and underlying energy which we call the essence. In spiritual traditions it is referred to as the soul or the higher Self. The essence is the good, the true and the beautiful in every human being. It is the inherent ethics and sense of connection with people and the world that everyone can connect with in their hearts.

The radiance of the essence begins to manifest itself when a person seeks meaning and a greater purpose for their life. The essence knows that it is connected to a greater whole, and that it has a unique purpose in life. This purpose is about making a difference. Making life better, more beautiful and more just for everyone.

Essence is connected to the deepest and most valuable qualities we have to give to the world. We can unfold this purpose in all areas of life. Some essence types become leaders, enlighteners or thinkers. Others become artists, researchers or creators.

In other words, the energy of the essence is the qualities and motivation with which we do good in the world.

The whole person

The point is, in other words, that we possess an incredibly varied inner life. There is a diversity of qualities, characteristics, and talents that give us all the opportunities to live a rich life.

Our psychological environment is largely like a vast uncultivated landscape just waiting to be utilized. We have inherent creative powers that make it possible to shape our lives based on the values we choose and the inner resources we bring with us.

However, we need a map that describes the inner worlds and how they unfold in our behavior. A language that accounts for the different types of energies we encounter. Tools to understand how we recognize these energies and learn to master them in our lives.

That is exactly what energy psychology delivers. A map. An energy language. A psychological tool.

Energy Psychology – the Fifth Wave in Psychology

Roberto Assagioli, 1888-1974
Roberto Assagioli, 1888-1974

Let us briefly clarify where energy psychology fits into the psychological landscape. It did not emerge out of thin air, but as a natural consequence of the evolutionary journey psychology has taken since its early days. When we look at the historical development of psychology, we can observe how psychology has gradually expanded its understanding of man.

The Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli has described energy psychology as the fifth wave of psychology. Psychology originally emerged as an offshoot of philosophy in the late 19th century. There was a desire at the time to form an independent science of man based on factual studies rather than philosophical theories. When one looks at the diverse psychological schools that have since emerged, one can generally speak of five waves or psychological ideas that have shaped its nature.

The first psychological wave

In the beginning, psychology was materialistic and scientifically oriented. It focused on the study of human sensations, memory and learning patterns. Humans were primarily perceived as physical objects that were to be considered as higher animals. From these scientific studies, behavioral psychology emerged . The psychologists John Watson (1878-1958) and BF Skinner (1904-1990) were prominent exponents of this direction, but they also relied on animal experiments that had been carried out much earlier.

The second psychological wave

Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939
Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939

Later, psychoanalysis emerged from the studies of the Austrian physician Sigmund Freud in particular. He discovered the subconscious and its influence on consciousness. Psychoanalysis largely emphasizes the drive life and its importance for the formation of personality, especially the pathological effects of repressed impulses. Psychoanalysis largely perceives man as a drive-driven being and has had a great focus on exploring the depth dimension of man. There has been a strong tendency to emphasize morbid and deviant behavior, which resulted in a rather pessimistic view of man.

The third psychological wave

Abraham Masiow, 1908-1970
Abraham Masiow, 1908-1970

The third psychological wave emerged in the middle of the last century, with the American psychologist Abraham Maslow as a leading pioneer. Maslow was very interested in research into well-functioning people and their different needs. It was called humanistic psychology , and it emerged, among other things, as a reaction against the pathological emphasis in psychoanalysis. Its core idea focuses on human health and the growth potentials and resources that can be actualized.

Existential -humanistic psychology is a movement that can also be brought under the humanistic direction. One of the essential features of existential psychology is the emphasis on our choices and the consequences of these. The American psychologist Rollo May (1909-1994) and the Austrian psychiatrist Viktor Frankl (1905-1997) are particularly exponents of this movement.

The fourth psychological wave

The fourth psychological wave arose in the immediate aftermath of humanistic psychology and also had Abraham Maslow as one of the prominent pioneers.

Ken Wilber, 1949-
Ken Wilber, 1949-

It was named transpersonal psychology because it is concerned with the scientific study of human peak experiences. These experiences give humans access to energies that go beyond the normal. That is, experiences of unity with nature, humanity and the cosmos. There can also be profound insights and inspiration that provide understanding of the meaning and purpose of life. The idea behind transpersonal psychology is thus to understand humans as an integral part of the cosmos.

In addition to contributing to the two previous directions, Roberto Assagioli was an active contributor to the shaping of the fourth wave through the founding of the so-called Psychosynthesis , a transpersonal psychology. The American thinker Ken Wilber has also had a great influence on transpersonal psychology, but has created his own direction under the name Integral Theory.

The fifth psychological wave

We have now reached the fifth wave of psychology, which studies man, nature and the cosmos as expressions of energy. Roberto Assagioli believed that the new fifth psychological wave could be called psychoenergetics. However, we have chosen to call it energy psychology . As already mentioned, it is partly inspired by the discoveries made in quantum physics in the last century. The English physicist Sir James Jeans (1877-1946) thus expressed that the universe is more “like a great thought than a great machine” . Developments in neuropsychology are storming forward and show a clear connection between consciousness and the brain’s electromagnetic field. Today, research is being conducted into the effects of meditation on the neurology of the brain, which gives clear indications of the influence of non-physical consciousness on the brain.

The focus of energy psychology is to examine the full spectrum of energies, both physical, mental and spiritual, with the aim of identifying and mastering them. If everything is energy, then man and the cosmos are an expression of energy. With the technological revolution, we have largely learned to master the laws and forces of the physical world, which has revolutionized the external world. Think of the invention of electricity, which illuminates large parts of the physical world. Today, we have an even greater need to revolutionize the inner world of man so that we can also illuminate it and bring forth the goodness, beauty and truth that lives here.

We find several examples of energy psychology today, and
I will describe some of them below.

Roberto Assagioli and his Psychosynthesis unfold clear elements of energy psychology. He hoped that Psychosynthesis would lead to a “science of the Self, its energies, manifestations and how these energies can be unfolded, contacted and used for constructive and therapeutic purposes” .

Roberto Assagioli has also made a minor contribution to a psychological typology based on the seven rays. In a manuscript found after his death and later published, an incomplete but useful description of his seven psychological types was found.3

Ken Wilber also describes in large parts of his writings the diverse psycho-spiritual states that we can all experience directly through meditation and introspection.

However, none of the above authors have presented a detailed and systematic description of the typological character of energies . An energy system that describes how the different types of, for example, thoughts, emotions and bodily emanations can be divided into different types of energy .

Alice Bailey, 1880-1949
Alice Bailey, 1880-1949

To find such a presentation, we must go to the English esotericist Alice Bailey, who in the years from 1919-1949 wrote an extensive literature with a great focus on what she called the seven rays. These seven cosmic rays are the basic building blocks of which everything in life consists. They are seven life energies that permeate all that is, from the smallest atom to the galactic universe. Her description of the seven rays is in accordance with the eternal philosophy, the common thread of insight found in all great spiritual traditions. Therefore, one also finds descriptions of this septenary in most other traditions. You can read more about the historical sources for the septenary in the appendix ‘The Sevenfold Universe’.

Sri Aurobindo, 1872-1950
Sri Aurobindo, 1872-1950

The Indian sage Sri Aurobindo is also an exponent of energy psychology. Based on the Hindu Vedas, he describes the septenary as follows: The manifestation of the universe occurs as a result of “an unlimited flow of heavenly rain – seven rivers, flowing down from a supramundane ocean of light, power and joy.”

Michael D. Robbins, Ph.D. (1943-)
Michael D. Robbins, Ph.D. (1943-)

The greatest living exponent of the energy psychology universe is undoubtedly the American psychologist Michael D. Robbins. His monumental work Tapestry of the Gods is a systematic and profound introduction to the seven rays. He writes within the traditional esoteric philosophy, and one cannot avoid reading his two-volume work if one wants a full introduction to the esoteric universe.

In this book I have largely chosen to focus on the psychological energies and behaviors that the seven life energies create. I have also deliberately limited my focus to the human domain, thereby omitting many of the cosmological connections that the theory of the seven rays also contains.

One could say that I have made the same kind of demarcation that the Western presentation of mindfulness-based meditation has also done. The Western exponents of mindfulness have omitted large parts of Buddhist philosophy and focus more on the practical application of the meditations. The Swiss psychiatrist CG Jung had the same approach when he presented his psychology of the four types based on the ancient teachings of the four temperaments. Today, his psychological system is used worldwide for personality type tests in various contexts.

The seven life energies in four different areas

Even if we leave out the cosmological considerations, there is still plenty to deal with. The seven life energies unfold everywhere in life, both collectively and individually. Let me illustrate this point in Figure 2. The diagram is taken from Ken Wilber’s writings and illustrates how everything in the world can be divided into four different quadrants and areas.

The four quadrants give us four different perspectives that we can use to explore the world of energies. It is an incredibly exciting study when we combine Ken Wilber’s four quadrants with the seven life energies. We get the opportunity to discover a wealth of new nuances everywhere we go. It gives us insights to understand whether we live in the right place, get into the right social circles and in general utilize all our potentials and opportunities.

The top half of the circle is about the individual energies we experience within and express in our behavior.

The lower half shows the collective energies we experience within ourselves and in our encounters with others.

Ken Wilber: The Four Quadrants
Figure 2: The four quadrants

The left half is about the inner psychological energies we can feel.

The right half shows the external objective physical energies we can see and are affected by through our own and others’ behavior.

The interesting thing is that the seven life energies unfold in all four
areas, but are experienced in different ways.

In the upper left part (ÖV) we have the ‘I’ with all the subjective energies we can feel inside. This is where we experience the five levels that we have described earlier: the energies of the body, emotions, thoughts, personality and essence. This also applies to the energies of the body, because we assess whether it is, for example, tired, vital, etc.

In the upper right part (UH) we see the subjective energies expressed in our actions. It is our behavior as it is expressed in what we can see . Our body language, communication and aura are clearly shown in our actions . It is often easier for others to observe the qualities of this behavior from the outside.

In the lower left part (LW) we are influenced by all the internal cultural energies we encounter in our family, society and the nation we live in as well as all the collective networks we associate with. It is the psychological atmosphere we live in together with others. This area includes all the invisible norms and values that exist in the subjective collective field. They are colored by political, cultural, religious and scientific perceptions and ways of thinking together.

In the lower right (LH) we see the physical surroundings, but also all the people we interact with and are influenced by. The physical landscape we live in, our residential area and the social structures of society (schools, workplaces and institutions) each have their own unique aura that influences us. The specific people we meet and collaborate with also influence us. Here we see collective social behavior in action. The physical structures we collectively create and the mutual influence we have on each other. This quadrant is also a reflection of the invisible cultural norms (NC) from which behavior stems.

Exercise: Four questions to reflect on

This exercise will give you an experience of the energies you encounter in the four quadrants.

Upper left quadrant : Sit down and close your eyes. Take a minute to follow your breathing and relax completely. Now become fully present to your psychological atmosphere right here and now. Become an observer of your inner states and now spend a few minutes observing them.

What moods and qualities do you experience in this now? Write them down.

Upper right quadrant : Stand in front of a mirror. Now observe your physical and psychological radiance in the mirror.

What psychological qualities do your body and atmosphere exude? Write them down.

Lower left quadrant: Sit down and close your eyes. Take a minute to follow your breath and relax completely. Now see yourself in a social situation with either your family, friends or workplace. Now observe the atmosphere that is among you and the invisible expectations, values and norms that characterize this atmosphere.

What cultural values and expectations characterize your shared atmosphere? Write them down.

Lower right quadrant: Sit down and close your eyes. Take a minute to follow your breathing and relax completely.
