GRATITUDE
Roberto Assagioli, (Assagioli Archives – Florence)[1]Original Title: Gratitudine. Translated by Jan Kuniholm
There is a thinking substance from which all things proceed and which, in its original state, permeates, interpenetrates and fills the interspaces of the universe.
A thought in such a substance produces the thing imagined by the thought. A person can form things in one’s own thought and can, by imprinting one’s own thought into formless substance, determine the creation of a given thing which one thinks about.
To do this, however, one must move from the old competitive mentality to the creative one; otherwise, one cannot be in harmony with the formless intelligence whose intentions are always creation and never competition.
One can succeed in being in full harmony with the formless substance only by nurturing a living and sincere gratitude for the benefits lavished upon us by it. Gratitude unifies a person’s mind with the divine intelligence of the substance, and thus a person’s thoughts are assimilated by the Formless. A person can remain on the creative plane only by unifying with the formless intelligence through a continuous and deep feeling of gratitude.
One must form a clear and well-defined mental image of what one desires to have, to do, to achieve; that is, what one wishes to succeed in being, and precisely what one wants to become. We must have this precise mental image at the top of our thoughts, and always with a sense of deep gratitude to the Supreme, for the sure fulfillment of such desires. For example, the person who desires to become rich must devote his hours of rest to contemplation of his vision and to series of grateful actions for its actual realization. The contemplation of the mental image, coupled with the surest faith and devout gratitude, is of paramount importance and cannot be recommended enough.
Such is the process of impressing the Formless, which sets the creative forces in motion.
