Energy types – your seven shopping pages

How developed are your seven energy types and action sides? Are you primarily dynamic, sensitive, mental, creative, analytical, dedicated or practical? Maybe you are a bit of everything, because energy psychology is evolutionary and distinguishes between your types from body to soul.

By Soren Hauge

The article describes the basic aspects of energy psychology, but perhaps you should first read the short introductory article on energy psychology. Here you can buy the book Energy Psychology and here you can receive my seven free meditations on your seven talents.

In a global and inter-spiritual world, there is a need for a multidimensional perspective on our human existence – a view of ourselves that describes the inner depth (body-mind-soul-spirit) and the outer connectedness in larger and larger social circles. In other words, there is a need for an understanding that gives us a map of our existence and that reaches around all the essential aspects and facets of human nature. Energy psychology is an integral and esoteric perspective that encompasses these aspects and that provides a unique view and insight into our psychology, both on a spiritual and personal level. The teaching about energy types has its strength in being both an insight-creating and practical tool for transforming our own lives and the relationships we enter into.

The spectrum of consciousness and the basic psychological functions

Typology belongs to differential psychology, which deals with individual differences in humans, and the most well-known of these are probably Jung’s four types, the Enneagram and the twelve astrological types. However, energy psychology, which this article describes, has a very important addition that makes it unique compared to so many other typologies. It contains much greater depth because it seeks to identify five different levels of types in humans. The soul, personality, mind, emotions and body, each with their own type, which makes the description of humans much more nuanced than in the common typologies. Although the common typologies, such as the Enneagram, distinguish between levels, it is the same type within the Enneagram that simply has different expressions at each level. Energy psychology indicates different types at most levels. Before we get to the specific description of the energy types, it is first necessary to clarify where the energy types originate. From a psychological perspective, the energy types arise in connection with the well-known psychological functions that integral and energetic psychology is based on.

If we make an observation of our own immediate way of functioning, it is possible to identify three simple, very different qualities or functions: Will, Feeling and Thought. They can be seen as reflections of deeper, spiritual facets of our being; Spiritual Will (life), Spiritual Love (quality) and Spiritual Intelligence (creativity). See the diagram below.

The seven psychological functions of energy psychology. The pie chart

The will within us is connected to purpose and direction. Without will, there is no change. It is the will that is the life-giving force for development and growth in all respects. It is the driving force and dynamo of our existence. Feeling gives us contact with ourselves and others. Without feeling, we have no antennae and cannot register what is happening in and around us. Feelings are our perception of states and moods, and the ability to know what we want and do not want. Thoughts are our ability to form wholes in the mind from the various impulses and sensations we receive, to create and structure and grow in understanding. Thoughts are our creative tool and the ability to bring about change and create in the world. When we combine the three basic aspects, additional characteristics arise that we all know and can easily identify in ourselves and in others.

If we take feeling and thought and let them work together, there is a possibility for imagination to flourish. Imagination or the ability to imagine unites feeling and thought or empathy and image formation. The result is the imaginative, playful ability that can connect ideas through sympathy and antipathy, fascination and interest. The immediate ingredient, which is the emotions, gives the thought forms a sensuality and experience-based character, which is the strength and possibility of imagination.

When will and thought come together and produce a purposeful, law-based form of thinking, we get a very familiar property, namely logic. Unlike regular thinking, logic always follows laws and has a goal-seeking mechanism, a methodology that is clearly focused, limited and purposeful. Logic is controlled thinking, directional, systematic thinking that gradually progresses towards a set goal, according to decided rules.

If we instead connect the will with the feeling, the result is an adventurous, emotionally charged movement, which we call passion. When we want something, we are always emotionally engaged, and at the same time the feeling has a clear movement towards a specific point or object. Passion is a targeted feeling. It is a desire, a longing, which is defined and controlled, not arbitrary and unclear. It is possible that we are not always aware of the object, but clarification will show that passion is will-determined emotional energy. When we speak of passion, all targeted impulses are included, including instincts, drives, needs, desires, longings, aspirations, etc.

What remains now is the possibility of combining all three primary properties in a single action. If we do this, we complete the process in action. Every action has an element of will (decision), feeling (attraction or repulsion) and thought (selected imagination and consideration), even though one of the three properties may dominate. Action is completion in external activity or manifestation and thus the body’s senses and organs of action are also particularly involved in this function. In this way we get the seven basic functions:

1. Will

2. Feeling

3. Thoughts

4. Imagination (feeling + thought)

5. Logic (will + thought)

6. Desire (will + feeling)

7. Action (will + feeling + thought)

All seven basic characteristics are both very basic psychological functions that all people possess, but are also expressions of consciousness functions or fields in the larger cosmological whole we are part of. They thus contain higher possibilities and more elementary functions. They can display higher, mature expressions, just as they can appear as more immature, subjectively colored characteristics. They constitute a spectrum of consciousness functions, and this spectrum contains different layers that can function at both the personality and soul levels, and which therefore display octaves of possibilities.

Together, these properties constitute the multidimensional realm of consciousness functions, which when expressed in external action have chosen to be called our energy types.

The seven energy types of energy psychology

We now give them names that simply show what they focus on:

1. Dynamic energy type (will-dominated)

2. Sensitive energy type (emotionally dominated)

3. Mental energy type (thought-dominated)

4. Creative energy type (imagination dominated)

5. Analytical energy type (logic dominated)

6. Dedicated energy type  (passion-dominated)

7. Practical energy type  (action-dominated)

Each of the individual energy types is a whole world, and in reality they display an even greater palette when fully developed. They thus have an introverted or introverted aspect, an extroverted or outgoing aspect.

The seven life energies and energy types

However, it is also necessary to briefly describe the relationship of the energy types to what esoteric philosophy calls the seven rays and what we call the seven life energies . Energy psychology contains such extensive perspectives that it places one in a cosmological context, which is described as the seven life energies. The seven universal life energies in reality constitute the essence of everything that exists, they color and enliven every cell and atom in everything that has been created. They are seven basic frequencies of the one life energy and are described in esoteric literature as: Will/power, love-wisdom, active intelligence, beauty, concrete knowledge, devoted idealism and creative organization.

The three levels of energy psychology

When we translate the seven basic life energies into human relationships and the energy type theory, they work in interaction with the seven basic psychological functions and the seven energy types.

The seven life energies can be described as coming from within a spiritual center, a collective level where we all experience an inner connection with each other and existence. From this level, the life energies flow through both a psychological (psychological functions) and a physical level (energy types). See the diagram on the right.

The life energies put us in touch with the cosmos and the collective unconscious, but it is through the basic functions that we can direct and unfold these energies in consciousness. When they are expressed in physical action, however, they show themselves as seven types of behavior (energy types). It is basically the same thing we are saying, just at different levels. In other words, there is a spiritual and collective level (life energies), a psychological level (basic psychological functions) and a physical level (energy types).

Let’s explore that point.

The psychology of energy types

Each energy type is a whole in itself, a world in itself, especially when seen in connection with the basic psychological function behind it. Or it is an angle on life. Together, all the energy types provide the full 360-degree view, but they contain – with each their own coloring – a holistic aspect or a holistic possibility. To better illustrate how the individual energy types color consciousness and especially behavior , or contain special qualities, we can give a very brief indication of their behavior, psychology or optics when the individual energy types dominate distinctly in a person. This will only be a very brief description, which can always become a caricature if it is simplified to an excessive degree. We therefore allow the seven basic tones to be touched upon, but remember that each of them needs the other six to be harmonized. As we will see later, the integration work between them naturally plays a central role.

1. The dynamic type

(Bailey: will, power, Assagioli: the type of will)

Dynamic energy type

The dynamic energy type is expressed in a purposeful and strong psychological constitution, capable of displaying a high degree of impartiality and independence. There is a tendency to be unfettered and focused on guiding principles, rather than details and long explanations. There is a robustness and a determination in the dynamic, which is a great strength if used constructively. Conversely, the more immature traits will manifest themselves in stubbornness, a dominant nature, an impatient nature, which is also often stubborn, and which not infrequently becomes violent if things do not go as desired.

The dynamic will find it easy to get leadership jobs and areas such as business management, politics, the military, specially trained combat units, police and fire departments are obvious. Pioneering work within all job types can indicate dynamic dominance, as can a joy in extreme sports, martial arts and highly demanding, physically stressful situations and tasks that generally require initiative and carefreeness in leading or being in the forefront.

2. The sensitive type

(Bailey: love-wisdom, Assagioli: the type of love)

Sensitive energy type

When the sensitive side is dominant in a person, it is reflected in an empathetic and very gentle nature. The sensitive has good antennae, both emotionally and mentally, and is generally very holistic, intuitive and embracing. There is something welcoming, friendly, patient and nice about this energy type, which has ease with human contacts. The sensitive is a person who knows people and is interested in insight and warm relationships. At the same time, the sensitive in the immature area shows sentimentality and strong ties to emotional matters. There is often great timidity and hypersensitivity and often a lack of judgment due to emotions and longings.

In terms of work, sensitives are typically found in work situations that have to do with people, be it in pedagogy, teaching, coaching and psychology, and in general in situations where human contact and good relationships are paramount. In terms of studies, sensitives will lean towards the humanities and they are often suitable for, for example, interreligious work and care, just as they often find it easy to deal with metaphysical, spiritual and esoteric-holistic topics that combine understanding and empathy with wholeness.

3. The mental type

(Bailey: active intelligence, Assagioli: active-practical type)

Mental energy type

The mental energy type is characterized by being very active in thought, and in some cases this is also reflected in energetic, physical action in connection with planning and strategy. The energy type is mentally creative and fruitful in ideas, which often come in large numbers in a busy mind. The mental is very communicative verbally, in writing and in gestures. At the same time, there is a certain distance and an ability to observe and change position in order to get around a matter well. The energy type is distinctly flexible and mobile. In its more immature corner, the mental is intellectually proud, superficial, can be very overcritical and manipulative in order to prove its own excellence. And then there is a clear tendency to restlessness or even hyperactivity.

In terms of work, the energy type is well suited to jobs that include philosophy, research theory, history, communication and preferably journalism, marketing and the advertising industry. The complexity of astrology also belongs here and think tanks, economic and financial areas, work as an architect, literary critic, IT consultant, software developer and computer innovation are obvious, as is being a merchant or in trade and industry.

4. The creative type

(Bailey: harmony through conflict, Assagioli: creative-artistic type)

Creative energy type

The creative energy type is characterized by a spontaneous nature that loves the immediate and here-and-now. These are people who thrive on improvising and having the ability to see a matter from both sides. They can be good peacemakers and mediators, and they have distinct intuitive and artistic talents. Some of them are distinctly harmony-seeking and others are more conflict-aware, but they all have the ability to interpret and express, experience the interaction of opposites and seek balance. On the other hand, they can have strong mood swings, show marked unpredictability and generally seem conflict-fixated and divided. They do not always deal with the truth consistently and they can suffer from comfort sickness and highly unstable activity.

In terms of work, they are found in areas such as art, psychology, design, fashion, dance, comedy, acting and music, and they can often thrive in peace mediation, interpreting, psychotherapy, wellness and body-related disciplines, such as yoga teaching.

5. The analytical type

(Bailey: concrete knowledge, Assagioli: scientific type)

Analytical energy type

The analyst is deeply concerned with demonstrating the utmost objectivity and interest in facts that are not up for discussion. Therefore, this energy type is distinctly objective and relates soberly and factually to information and data that can increase knowledge and clarity about a given topic. The analyst thinks in a specific way and methodically works through the empirical data to obtain unambiguous knowledge. It is a logical approach, and it probably takes a long time. The analyst separates and gathers, dissects and concludes and truthfully searches for the right, the correct knowledge. Conversely, the analyst can become extremely over-analytical and display a skeptical attitude, which is often combined with an emotionally cold attitude. The analyst can be arrogant and narrow-minded and often has difficulty with emotions and behaves socially awkwardly.

The many work functions that naturally belong to this energy type are specialist functions that either immerse themselves like a burning glass in knowledge niches, or that operate with technical ingenuity in concrete contexts. It can be as an archaeologist, astronomer or forensic scientist, or it can be in the police technical department. The analyst can be a dietician, mechanic, optician, biologist, neurologist, doctor, surgeon or perhaps a museum curator.

6. The dedicated type

(Bailey: abstract idealism, Assagioli: devoted-idealistic type)

Dedicated energy type

The dedicated energy type is passionately committed to the cause that fills the life horizon. You will feel a heartfelt determination, where it is a clear, emotional commitment that is at the forefront. The dedicated person is purposeful, involved, highly motivated and with the same goal-seeking mechanism as the analyst, just with a focus on a heartfelt commitment that is not always easy to explain rationally. The dedicated person is wholehearted, devoted, faithful and very humble in relation to his or her cause. This naturally also manifests itself on an immature level in the form of an unbalanced, fanatical and naive approach to the burning focus, which can be a person, a product or an idea. The dedicated person is prone to being authoritarian, superstitious, immoderate and basically unrealistic.

Whether the dedicated person looks inward as the dreamer, or outward as the ardent activist, it will be evident in their work relationships, or in the calling in life that is considered an ultimatum. It can be as a missionary, a new age religious person, or more down to earth as a marketing salesman of the “best” product, or privately expressed as intense devotion to family, children or a leisure interest. It can also be work as an NGO activist, philanthropist, e.g. a Red Cross volunteer or an activist at Greenpeace. In terms of work, it can also be evident through work as a nurse, a home helper, an employee at a hospice or in service functions where one helps others, e.g. as a stewardess, waiter or in a leading function for health, nursing or healthcare, most often with a focus on care and humanity.

7. The practical type

(Bailey: ceremonial magic, order, Assagioli: organizing type)

Practical energy type

When it comes to the practical energy type, it is the universalist, who is good at combining all elements to achieve the best result. The practitioner is by nature coordinating and organizing and has a sense of timing and the proper economic use of energy to achieve the most far-reaching, functional results. The practitioner is efficient and a multi-talented person who pulls all the strings so that will, feeling and thought can result in well-executed activity and manifestation. When the more immature takes over, it is rather expressed in a routine-fixated mentality that is power-oriented, controlling and often also over-perfectionist. The practitioner can be extremely materialistic, precisely because efficiency is paramount and this can affect the human factor.

In terms of work, we will be able to find the practitioner in a multitude of jobs, covering, for example, legislative work and the judiciary, work as a conductor or toastmaster, manager or project coordinator, or in administration. The practitioner is – in addition to often being the “do-it-yourself type” – a person who can focus on financial business, or it can be, for example, an air traffic controller, a film director or a financial administrator.

Levels and dominances

A description such as the one just made of the seven energy types is of course of great value. But what really gives a deeper perspective on the energy types is not simply that we have a dominance of one type. The important perspective is the fact that we have not only one personality type, but also a number of types at other levels than the personality. We thus distinguish between the different levels of our human constitution. We distinguish in principle between three main levels within us:

1. The
Spirit primarily contains Universal Will, and it is also from here that the seven life energies emanate.
2. The Soul’s
Space primarily contains transpersonal love-wisdom, here the life energies are colored by this quality and unfolded through the soul’s energy type.
3. Personality
Primarily encompasses coordinated expression through thought, feeling and action. Here basic psychological functions and personality energy types are expressed.

The domain of spirit involves an identification with the universal spirit and is so far removed from the common human experience that we do not focus directly on it at first. It concerns the deepest and most spiritual experiences that are within anyone’s reach, and it requires a very mature spirituality to include it in the context of the energy types. Therefore, it is mostly in the area of the soul and personality that it is possible to work practically with the energy types. The difference between the level of soul and personality is primarily about the breadth of consciousness, where the soul expresses the altruistic, embracing element, while the personality is more egocentrically oriented, until the soul energy type takes over and increasingly uses the personality as its expression in the world. The consciousness of the soul is higher and more far-reaching than that of the personality. Therefore, it both transcends and includes the needs of the personality.

Thus, at the soul level, and at the personality level, there will be a primary energy type to which the other energy types are subordinate as they develop. In other words, the soul energy type can be one of the seven energy types, because although its fundamental tone is always love-wisdom, this consciousness can be developed in many ways, for example in art, politics, commerce, religion, social work, etc. Similarly, in each of the three aspects of the personality there will be dominances. The picture will therefore look like this:

The five psychological levels of man

1.  The Soul (Love-Wisdom)… One type of energy dominates

2. The personality (integrated expression)… One energy type dominates

3. Mental (mind)… One type of energy dominates

4. Emotional (the nature of feelings)… One type of energy dominates

5. Physical (the body / vitality)… One energy type dominates

We thus have five levels of energy type dominance, all of which must be taken into account when the most complete picture is to be developed. The dominant energy type of the soul or love-wisdom quality is the deepest force, the inner magnet or fundamental tone, which is reflected in all the exterior, in the personality and its threefold expression. In the diagram on the right, the soul corresponds to essence, as it is the meaning and essence behind all the exterior. It is the intention that guides development even though it is not immediately visible in the world of the personality, if consciousness is not yet developed.

The personality’s own fundamental tone has its dominant energy type, which becomes evident when a person is integrated into his everyday self and the interaction between thoughts, feelings and actions becomes reasonably coordinated. This stage characterizes the mature person who has entered into character in the world, individual and purposeful. The mental, emotional and physical fundamental tone is then subject to the personality.

But all five dominances play a role when the overall picture is called up, and it is the clarification of these dominances that constitutes the first major work when the understanding of the energy types is to be integrated. During life, the energy types will gradually become apparent from the bottom up as the person first develops physical self-awareness, emotional, mental, etc.

It is not always an easy process to track down energy type dominances, but it contains the keys to a person’s inner drive and life mission, just as it provides important keys to understanding our daily activities and tendencies when the personality and its inherent dominances are clarified. Therefore, the clarification work is of invaluable importance and the process is insight-generating in itself. In energy psychological contexts, we work with various tools that include analysis work, voice dialogue, meditation, conversation and role play. ( www.jivayou.com  offers various profiles that clarify your types and with offers for follow-up coaching clarification)

Overall integration

The energy typology is based on the understanding that everything consists of seven life energies, which in humans become seven energy types in unfolded form, but because each of the seven energy types has an introvert and an extrovert personality type and a soul type, 21 different energy types arise. We all have energy types within us, – but some are primary and others secondary.

As the work of clarifying which dominances exist at the soul and personality level progresses, it becomes relevant to look at how the energy types involved achieve the greatest possible balance. If the starting point is that each energy type is a whole in itself, then we can look at their mutual relationships, and the use of the basic pie chart shows the relationships relatively simply:

As can be seen from the basic pie chart, a picture emerges where the energy types are arranged according to their composition. The three primary energy types, whose basic components are will, feeling and thought, form a triangle with the tip pointing upwards. The imaginative, creative type (4) lies between the sensitive (2) and the mental (3), because feeling and thought are its components. The analytical logician (5) lies between the dynamic (1) and the mental (3), because will and thought are its components. And the idealist (6) lies between the dynamic (1) and the sensitive (2), because will and feeling are its components. There remains the practical (7), which lies in the middle, because it has both will, feeling and thought as components.

Energy psychology pie chart with energy types

By using the pie chart, you can see which energy type is furthest away from a chosen energy type. This will then constitute the strongest integrating factor. In energy psychology, we call this the integrator . The energy types that are next furthest away will also be important in the integration of the energy type, and they are called helpers .

Finally, the closest energy types will of course also play a role in balancing the given energy type, and they are called neighbors . In the case of the seventh energy type, as long as it is not transformed, it has all six others as neighbors, where 4, 5 and 6 will be especially important because 1, 2 and 3 constitute its primary components, but the balancing of all six gives the universal practitioner (7) the opportunity to find his best balance.

If we briefly touch on the individual energy types, we can suggest how holistic integration can be promoted:

1. Dynamic holistic integration

The dynamic energy type (1) especially needs to learn the playful, poetic and immediate from its primary integrator (4), the empathetic, patient (2) and the adaptable, flexible (3) from its two neighbors. In addition to this, there are also things to learn from the three neighbors (5, 6 and 7).

2. Sensitive holistic integration

The sensitive energy type (2) especially needs to learn the logical, methodical discernment (5) from its primary integrator, the powerful dynamics (1) and the impersonal, strategic sense (3) from its two helpers. In addition to this, there are also things to learn from the three neighbors (4, 6 and 7).

3. Mental holistic integration

The mental energy type (3) especially needs to learn the fervent idealism (6) from its primary integrator, the purposeful determination (1) and the loving empathy (2) from its helpers. In addition to this, there are things to learn from the three neighbors (4, 5 and 7).

4. Creative holistic integration

The creative energy type (4) especially needs to learn the purposeful sense of direction (1) from its primary integrator, the methodical systematicity (5) and the unwavering dedication (6) from its two helpers. In addition, there are things to learn from the three neighbors (2, 3 and 7).

5. Analytical whole integration

The analytical energy type (5) especially needs to learn the embracing kindness (2) from its primary integrator, the playful immediacy (4) and the wholehearted idealism (6) from its two helpers. In addition to this, there are things to learn from the three neighbors (1, 3 and 7).

6. Dedicated end-to-end integration

The dedicated energy type (6) especially needs to learn mental flexibility and impersonality (3) from its primary integrator, humor and lightness (4) and a sense of common sense (5) from its two helpers. In addition to this, there are things to learn from the three neighbors (1, 2 and 7).

7. Practical holistic integration

The practical energy type (7), as the universalist, needs to learn from all six others, not least playful sense (4), discernment (5) and wholeheartedness (6), but also deeper purposefulness (1), empathy (2) and real understanding (3).

The specific situations a person finds themselves in, combined with the overall picture of energy type dominance, will naturally evoke highly individual integration processes, where the schematizations just given are only general suggestions. The exploration of the very specific challenges constitutes the work process and leads to unique discoveries for the individual. To see the integration processes for the individual energy types, we can give an example with a single energy type. If we say that it is about the dynamic energy type(1), then it will be put at the center in order to integrate the other six and achieve optimal balance.

The dynamic energy type dominates and is therefore at the center. The task now is to see what in particular can be learned from the primary integrator (4, indicated in red) and the two alliance partners (2 and 3, indicated in yellow). Finally, the three neighbors (5, 6 and 7) must be listened to. Here it may turn out that the dynamic (1) may need to loosen up and learn lightness from the creative (4), but that specific circumstances imply that there is particular development potential to be gained from the mental (3)’s ability to thoroughly understand the many sides of a matter. It also turns out that there is gentleness to be learned from the sensitive (2) in very specific situations.

This imaginary example just shows how many variations and discoveries are hidden in the integration work. Concrete exercises can be implemented, for example through meditation, role play or conversation, which initiates the process. But in reality, the possibilities for holistic integration are unlimited, depending on skills and areas of interest.

Energy psychology and the depth perspective

The understanding of the types of energy is part of a perspective called synthesis , a holistic approach that always takes four essential aspects into account:

I, autonomy, standing , the individual perspective.

We, communion, to accommodate , the collective perspective.

Being, identity, being , the identity perspective.

The doing, manifestation, creating , the activity perspective.

If these four angles or aspects are kept in mind when working with the energy types, then a truly holistic depth dimension can be achieved, where all important factors are taken into account at all conceivable levels. We will not go into detail here about how this can be concretized and divided, but will only formulate it as general questions that can help to show the direction:

1) I – autonomy: Am I myself? Do I naturally rest in my authority?

2) We – relationship: How do I relate to other people and the world around me?

3) Being – identity: What do I identify with? Body, emotions, thoughts, being?

4) Doing – creation: What am I creating in my life? Am I using my creative abilities?

In reality, one must operate with two clearly definable levels of energy types, which we will call here the personality energy types  and the essence  energy types . In doing so, we not only accommodate the driving forces and motivations of the everyday self. We also open up for the higher perspective, which brings the most far-reaching, spiritual overtones into activity. This also enables us not only to accommodate the immediate needs that belong to the personality, but to include the soul perspective and the essence that we are here to unfold. This can be briefly indicated in the following overviews, which clearly distinguish between levels of functions and between levels of motivation or drive. In the table below you will see an overview of all the energy types, their respective roles or archetypes, which motivations and driving forces.

Energy types and motivation

A concrete example

To illustrate how it might appear for an individual, we can describe a fictional example that shows the dynamics and interaction between the dominant energy types. The soul energy type is a 2 (the Enlightener) and the personality energy type is a 5 (the Explorer). These two are the most important and most important to clarify when working with understanding the interaction. Subordinate to these two, in the personality itself, we have the mental energy type, which is 1 (dynamic), the emotional energy type, which is 6 (dedicated) and the physical energy type, which is 3 (mental).

If we assume that we are dealing with a person who is still strongly focused in his personality, and therefore not very open to soul influence, then there will be a very strong and intense focus on factual knowledge, common sense and a logical mentality. The goal will be to strive for concrete, measurable knowledge and with an interest in, for example, mathematical, technical or very specialized fields of study. Due to the mental dominance (1), there will be a very targeted mentality, which likes to focus on one area in life that can increase understanding. This could, for example, be to immerse oneself in technical expertise within a very narrow area. The emotional dominance (6) reinforces the intense commitment, so that it also engages the emotions, sometimes with vehemence and choleric outbursts when the expertise is critically challenged, or when the person encounters completely different points of view than his own. The physical energy type (3) entails a great degree of mobility and this can be reflected in physical clutter in the surroundings, which due to the technical commitment does not receive much attention.

If we now assume that this person matures through crises and experiences to a greater susceptibility to the influence of the soul, then his search for love and wisdom, rather than purely factual, detailed knowledge, will create a growing conflict between inner values and outer commitment. At some point, the soul energy type cannot be ignored, and this may manifest itself in an interest in subjects that traditional logic does not encompass and that language does not capture. A growing interest in spirituality and mysticism may creep in, perhaps especially through new research that shows that reality is greater than the mechanistic paradigm allows for. It is also possible that the soul energy type expresses itself through a greater degree of human spaciousness, kindness and warmth, and that there will be an interest in putting technical knowledge at the service of humanity, for example through economically efficient use to eliminate poverty in developing countries. The heart is brought into the specialized knowledge the person has, and the desire to help begins to intervene. The soul influence also leads to a softening of the very intense emotions and the very focused mind. The emotional life will have an easier time becoming peaceful and the mind will open up to greater wholes. And physically there will be a greater attention to taking better care of oneself and one’s health.

The example here is of course only illustrative and there are many different possibilities for how this particular constellation of energy types can be expressed. The deeper perspective is always to open up the interaction between soul and personality and begin the integration work between the energy types so that they become more rounded in their expression.

Living the essence we are through the tools we have

The integration work is not an end in itself. The decisive factor will always be that we are fundamentally a soul with an essence quality that expresses itself through a personality or a tool. Our soul essence tells us about our deepest values, motives and driving forces – in other words, about the purpose of our existence, our life mission. Our personality is the form of expression or the tool we use to realize the essence we are. A deep understanding of this is the key to true happiness, to meaning in life and to the path or paths we can best follow through the many phases of existence.

We are basically our essence or soul. We use our personality with thoughts, emotions and body. If we forget who we are and live as if we are our tool, then we are not in tune with our values and our course through life will be far from optimal and joyful. We lack the irreplaceable inner peace that comes from knowing that you are doing the right thing at the right time and in the right place with the right motivation. The discovery of the essential soul dominance and the corresponding personality dominance is therefore of crucial importance for our path through life and the degree of happiness and satisfaction we experience.

There is a big difference between being a leader, a communicator, or a researcher in essence. The soul essence is not anonymous, like a blank sheet of paper. We all have within us a deep drive to fulfill a life path in accordance with our innermost values. The creative energy type is driven towards beauty and harmony, whereas the idealistic energy type is driven towards the highest good and service. And although we all contain the full spectrum, our centers of gravity are different.

That is why the discovery of the dominant energy type of the soul essence is so important, because it shows us our spiritual compass, which lies behind all external structures and circumstances. It is ultimately a question of answering why we are here and what our mission is. Similarly, it is of great importance to understand how we carry out our life mission. And this how is precisely about the way we act. The key to this is to be found in the personality’s energy type dominance, as well as the dominances in the mental, emotional and physical areas.

Energy psychology as a tool

As this article shows, the teachings of energy psychology about energy types encompass a psychology that touches on a spectrum of possibilities and characteristics in the human constitution. This spectrum of possibilities is optimized through holistic integration and through the growing understanding of the dominances and especially the nature and interrelationships of soul essence and personality.

But it is obvious that there are a multitude of applications in connection with insight into the energy types. In addition to the indispensable individual benefit, which is of course central, energy psychology can be used as a therapeutic tool. It is a clear tool for improving the understanding of group dynamics, leadership and teamwork and can therefore be used in workplaces, in families and in general in relation to human relationships. Understanding our differences is part of the gain, but through integration work a growth process can be initiated that helps the individual to conquer their authenticity and demonstrate integrity. (Regarding studies and fieldwork around this, see note 2 after the article: Type studies within psychosynthesis.)

Energy psychology is thus a powerful tool for us to get to know ourselves, and a possible help in interpersonal relationships where we need to cooperate with others on common goals, or simply coexist. The Energy Psychology training provides help to facilitate these processes and trains participants to help themselves and other people clarify their soul and personality typology. In the work with meditation, energetic psychology, role-playing, group dynamics, coaching and analysis, clarity and the ability to apply the knowledge gained are extracted. And we especially need to use insights about our own nature, for the benefit – not just for ourselves, but for the world.

Type studies within psychosynthesis

Within psychosynthesis, very interesting field studies have been conducted into the types and their relationship to both individual and collective behavior, for example by J. Scott Burd, John W. Cullen, Douglas Russel and René Fugere. These have included research and practice on leadership and teamwork, and these works are closely aligned with energy psychology in terms of the core understanding of the seven primary energy types. It is also worth mentioning the work Spiritual Highlights, Kentaur Forlag by Roberto Assagioli’s student, Piero Ferrucci. The book is a definite study in the psychology of types with a wealth of concrete examples.
